Catalyst Smatalyst

October 5, 2010

In honor of myself trekkin over/down-a-bit to Catalyst this week, you get this, fo free. It is a guest post, by Tyler Tarver, from the past! Great scott! It’s actually a post from last year, on my old site, which I posted on no more than once a month for 5 months in a row. Now I post consistently at least 5 times a week. What does that say about me? “The heart wants what the heart wants” -Tupac. “Tupac didn’t say that, you’re misquoting.” -Abe Lincoln.

Ps If you can’t tell, I used to link crap all the time for extra little jokes (think of them as hashtags for you twitterers), I don’t know if these work or will explode into cat vomit, but they’re there, so, what-ev.

Hola por favor, we do this dance again, this time, I’m taking the lead like Antonio Bandaras. Much has happened since the last time I wrote something no one read. Which is code for “this crap is long”, but it is not so quit crying Marshall Mathers LP.

Love/Hate Game

Love: When television shows take the higher road and assume that not all people have nada self-control and do whatever they please with whomever they please without saying please. Morals, people, morals.

Hate: Whenever the 300+ bellybutton model alcoholic next to me at my poverty inducing professional sporting event yells the whole mother-father time about how they need to “catch the ball” or “throw it.” Yeah bub, we know. Obviously, this guy knows a little more than you and me because we’re paying money to see him “catch the ball.”  Get a grip, chump, it’s a game, and not even one you are good enough to play or coach.

Upon the sundial of the first week of October, me wife, me self, and a ragtag group of lovable misfits set out on a journey to a conference titled Catalyst, which is for people involved in underground arms dealing, not guns or weapons, but real human arms (or a Christian leadership conference, your choice). It was, to say the least, phenomenatastic.

Important things happened, which I could go into, but won’t until times that are not now. One less important thing, I got to meet one of my very favorite authors/speakers Rob Bell, and choked like Casey when he signed my/his book. We probably won’t hang out that much from this point on.

In essence, herbal that is, I got to spend a few days with my lovely wife and some good friends listening to some great speakers talk about important things. Kinda vague, but not in my head. A couple important things I thought were said:

It’s not about leaving our mark, it’s about leaving God’s mark. Am I willing to submit my gifts/decisions/situations to God’s story? Do not be concerned about who is for or against you, but about who you are for. Andy Stanley

It is not incompetence that worries me as much as overconfidence…In times of crisis, we think we need daring and bold, but what we really need is humility. Babies come into this world with their fists clenched because they want it all, when people die their hands are open because they realize they can’t take anything with them. Malcolm Gladwell

Is smaller necessarily less important? Is bigger better? Is the church known for its true and costly gifts it gives the community? The eucharist was Christ’s costly gift. We are blessed as we are, Christ blesses us right here, right now. God is our example, we don’t have to do anything He isn’t doing. Is he stressing? Do not do anything because of popularity, but because God calls us to. Be calm/centered. Things may be hard/difficult/costly, but not a burden. Rob Bell (a close buddy of mine)

Chuck Swindoll said some supergreat things that you can read by clickin a right here.

“God calls us to be fearless leaders.” –Priscilla Shirer

“Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire.” -Thomas Merton quote quoted by Louie Giglio

That’s the end of other people’s words for a while. I have a lot more to throw out there, but I’m gonna hold off for a while because this writing escapade has begun to have a lot of junk in the trunk.

Maybe, just maybe, I’ll break my once a month rule on writing something. Or maybe I won’t. Guess you’ll never know, until you find out. This has gone downhill fast.

Yo man let’s get outta here, word to your mother.

Ps. Thanks for reading this mom; it’s okay Amanda, I still love you.

“You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself.”  -Galileo Galilei
